Uncovering the secrets of the Outer Islands

With 60 different islands in the BVI, exploration is not only encouraged, it’s practically required! Travel between islands is easy here, as is the pace of life. So getting around is carefree and convenient.

No matter where you’re staying, you’ll want to make sure you visit The Baths on Virgin Gorda. Bring your snorkeling gear and explore the amazing water caves and glowing pools. Here’s a secret: Go early so you don’t have to deal with the passengers from the cruise ships.

Visit our next destination and you’ll understand why it’s called Salt Island. Thousands of pounds of salt are still harvested here every year. It’s a slice of the way things used to be and still are on BVI. Secret: “The Deep” was filmed on Salt Island.

Sandy Cay and Sandy Spit are pristine little jewels. Each is uninhabited and surrounded by unspoiled white sand beaches. When you’re on Sandy Cay check out the small pond there, which is a habitat for many rare species.

Robert Louis Stevenson was so taken with Norman Island that he used it as his inspiration for “Treasure Island.” The many reefs, bays and caves are treasured here for their great snorkeling. If you get thirsty, there’s a floating bar in the harbour. After a few rum drinks there you can take a dive right off the ship to cool off.

Owned by Sir Richard Branson, Necker Island is a favorite of celebrities who want to get away from it all. Because it’s a private island, you’ll need binoculars and a bit of luck to do any stargazing off its coast.

Cooper Island is a very walkable island and is filled with exotic plants and birds so be sure to bring your camera. When you’re tired of being on land, head into the crystal blue waters and enjoy the marine life that abounds there. A little secret: Jimmy Buffett’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise” was inspired by Cooper Island.
