What To Do on the Other Islands of BlueWith 60 different islands in the BVI, island-hopping is not only encouraged, it’s practically required! You will go from island to island here, the way you go shopping back home, quickly and comfortably.Wherever you’re staying, head over in the morning to the Baths on Virgin Gorda. You’ll want to get there before the cruise ships disembark. Bring your snorkeling gear and explore amazing water caves and glowing pools. Visit Salt Island, made famous in the movie “The Deep”, where 1,000 pounds of salt are still harvested per year. There’s a charming BVIslander who still does it the old-fashioned way. Sandy Cay and Sandy Spit are perfect little islands jewels. Each is uninhabited and fringed by pristine white sand beaches. And Sandy Cay has a small pond that is a habitat for many rare species. Norman Island was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, so searching for treasure is popular. The many reefs, bays and caves make for unforgettable snorkeling. And if you get thirsty, there’s a floating bar. People have been known to dive off after a few too many rum drinks, but it’s all for fun. Necker Island, owned by Sir Richard Branson, has become a magnet for celebrities. Now it’s a private island, so unless you have reservations or an invitation, you’ll be stargazing with binoculars. Cooper Island was the inspiration for Jimmy Buffet’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise”. You can explore the island on foot and see an extraordinary variety of exotic plants and birds. And bring your snorkeling gear to find the rich marine life in the clear blue waters. |
