Black Tomato and the British Virgin Island Launch Their 'Keepsake Keep Sail' Campaign

NEW YORK (MAY 5, 2015) -  Award-winning travel experts, Black Tomato and the BVI Tourism Board, have teamed up on an immersive project that encourages the US public to help create a one-off experience to the British Virgin Islands. This ‘Keepsake Keep Sail’ campaign aims to celebrate a vibrant part of the Caribbean that Black Tomato and its clients hold close to their hearts.

The marketing campaign looks at the importance of keepsakes as a means to ensure special travel experiences stay alive and act as inspiration for further travel. Black Tomato is inviting the public to share their favorite travel keepsakes, be it a trinket, a photo, a song, or a shell, online via Instagram (posting images to @blacktomatotravel with the hashtag #BVIKeepsake) or offline when the teams take to the streets of New York City on June 10, 11, and 12 with a giant wall. Here, the public will be invited to draw, write or pin on a keepsake that evokes a particular travel memory for them.

By submitting a picture of a keepsake online or offline, along with a description on why it is so special to them, people are entering into a competition to win an incredible trip for two sailing around the BVI in a Sunsail 444. Far from being an ordinary trip around the British Virgin Islands, the boat the winners sail will host a custom-made, one-of-a-kind main sail, designed using the top keepsake entries. This collage of notes and images from across the US will bring to life the power of travel and memories -- a collective keepsake of its own.

Tom Marchant, co-founder of Black Tomato, said “The British Virgin Islands have been a key destination for Black Tomato since our inception, so it makes perfect sense to be working with them on this unique and exciting campaign. On a personal level, the BVI is one of my favorite escapes, and living out in New York means it’s easy for me to disappear down there for a few days. I discover a new secret about the islands every time I go. Whether I’m exploring Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda or sailing between the other beautiful islands, each day I spend in the BVI harvests new moments and memories that become treasured keepsakes for me.”

Sharon Flax Mars from the BVI Tourism Board said “We are very happy to be partnering with Black Tomato on this program to showcase the British Virgin Islands. It will be an exciting event and we encourage everyone to join us at the 3 locations to learn more about our Islands and the secrets which we know they will cherish. I would like to thank Sunsail for partnering with us on this campaign. It is these partnerships that allow us to bring the territory to life."

Highlights of the Keepsake Keep Sail campaign:

•Prize trip & custom made main sail – Using the top competition entries, a custom-made main sail will be designed and used on the Sunsail 444 Catamaran. This will be sailed around the islands by the winners, but also continue its journey beyond that, being used as an active sail for Catamaran for the duration of the following season. The collective nature of the competition prize will act as a giant keepsake and lasting reminder of the activity.

•New York City event  (offline competition) – The Black Tomato and British Virgin Island teams will be taking to the streets of New York with a giant wall, where people will draw, write or pin on a special keepsake travel memory. The team will spend 3 days in Tribeca, West Village and Meat Packing on June 10-12 and there will be a photographer on site to record the interaction with the public.

•Instagram (online competition) – As one of today’s most prolific social media platforms, Black Tomato is asking people to become immersed in the creation of the sail by submitting pictures of their travel keepsakes, or a scribbled note about a memory, to Instragram.

How to enter: Instagram a picture of your favorite keepsake (or some written words about it if it’s not a tangible object) to @blacktomatotravel with the hashtag #BVIkeepsake.

•The digital wall – A selection of top entries will be added to our online wall each week so people can gain inspiration throughout the duration of the campaign.

•Videos – A series of videos will be produced out in the BVI, where locals bring the destination to life and talk about their own keepsakes, secret locations, and unique memories from living on the islands.

•New trip – An exciting and new 5-night sailing itinerary will be created that allows people to book a trip to sail the Keepsake Keep Sail boat, with its custom made main sail, around the British Virgin Islands. The team will curate a special route that includes a selection of the most unique experiences and keepsake moments the different islands have to offer.
