BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS’ FOOD FETE, NOVEMBER 2019, SPARKS CAREER FOR BUDDING CHEFS

9 October 2019 – London: The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are gearing up for their 6th Annual Food Fete in November, a month-long celebration of cuisine which is spread out across six different islands: Tortola, Scrub Island, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke and Cooper Island. The BVI Food Fete has not only drawn visitors from all corners of the world, but it has also acted as a springboard for many young aspiring chefs.

This culinary festival has been a launching pad for many rising culinary stars who have grown up in the BVI. Chefs such as Kevin Jones from Tortola were given the opportunity, through the BVI Food Fete, to work alongside celebrity chefs such as Chef Hefferman, a chef at Grand Banks, New York and Chef Michael Ferrare, also of New York. For Kevin, who is a cofounder of Nyammin’, a supper club that celebrates the Caribbean, these invaluable introductions into the culinary world enabled him to go on to be a Chef de Partie at Aztec Hotel & Spa in Bristol, England.

Kevin commented on how the BVI Food Fete has impacted his life,

“It had a huge impact on my life because as you know, Tortola is a really small island so there isn’t a lot of external influence on the cuisine and the food we eat. The BVI Food Fete showed me how this industry would allow me to travel and do what I love. It gave me the inspiration and passion to go on to be a chef who still promotes the BVI”

This November, alongside other native BVI and international chefs, Kevin Jones will be wowing guests with a signature dish at Taste of Tortola, a fun street-style festival, which will be bustling with cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, and food stands cooking up a feast at the Queen Elizabeth II Park.

The BVI Food Fete has a diverse schedule of culinary events, where locals and visitors alike can experience a taste of the BVI throughout the islands, as they come together to celebrate the destinations’ culinary heritage and traditions and welcome award-winning chefs from across the world.

The BVI Food Fete will include a Rum Festival at Cooper Island; a jazz-fuelled gourmet party with stunning views of The Baths at the Taste of Virgin Gorda; an elegant affair featuring unique culinary creations and signature cocktails at the BVI Gourmet Soiree; and the fete’s most popular event, the two-day Lobster Festival on Anegada.

The BVI Food Fete is not only a fantastic way of showcasing the wide range of culinary delights across the islands, it is also an event which gives aspiring young chefs across the islands the inspiration to follow their dreams.
